Germany Trip 1969
"During the Easter Holidays Mr. & Mrs. Sutherland, Miss Gervaise and Mrs. Hinze took a party of 29 girls and boys on a Youth Hostelling trip to Germany from the 2nd to the 10th April.
After a choppy crossing of the English Channel we spent one night in a Youth Hostel just outside Ostend. The next day we travelled by train across Belgium into Germany, via Cologne, where we saw the famous Cologne Cathedral. Later that afternoon we arrived at Bingerbruck which is near Bigen where we spent the next three nights. From the Hotel at Bingerbruck we went on one of Mr. Sutherland's "short" walk which turned out to be 10 miles of walking up and down hills.
Our next destination was Lintz, which took 7 hours on a luxurious Rhine cruiser. We passed beautiful Rhine scenery and when we arrived in Linz everyone was captivated by its beauty and welcomed the thought of spending three days there. Everything was perfect including the weather and the Youth Hostel.
From Linz we went on another of Mr. Sutherland's famous walks, which was a little shorter, only 8 miles, but everyone agreed it was ell worth the effort.
Our last Youth Hostel was in the historic town of Brugge where we spent a most amusing and enjoyable last evening.
The channel crossing back was very smooth and we all arrived home sooner than we wanted to.
Everyone agreed this was an unforgettable holiday and we would like to express our gratitude to the organisers who certainly showed a great deal of patience throughout the holiday (we even excuse Mr. Sutherland's walks)." Taken from School Magazine 1969
